Istanbul Museum, iS.CaM since 1998

In Turkish "is" means "soot" and "cam" means "glass". These are the two things you need if you want to look into the sunlight. Actually these are the two words we found while searching for an acronym for Istanbul Contemporary Art Museum. We chose these two words as they have meaning both in English and Turkish. As you "is" may refers to "as is" and "cam" may refers to "camera".

Our logo is composed of two C's that are referring to "Çağdaş" in Turkish and "Contemporary" in English. The letter "Ç" in Turkish is a "C" plus an attachment from the below and read as "che". In the logo we tried to emphasise this difference and similarity. The font is Arile and the mirrored C's are looking up, when combined referring to ancient caligraphies as well. However it may refer to unification or differeances.

Istanbul Contemporary Art Museum is established in 1998 by Mehmet Sinan. We are the first Contemporary Art Museum of Istanbul. iS.CaM is an independent art organisation with no major state or corporate support. We develop and colloborate into projects with other institutions and we are open for collaborations. Currently Genco Gulan is the Director and Marcus Graf is the Chief Curator. Ryanne de Boer is responsible for the online projects and Web Biennial. Mercedes Gonzales de Garay is in charge of the Media Lab. Yesim Ozsoy is the Director of VDST and Deniz Aygun is the Program Director of Galata Perform.
